This is a Vancouver Island marmot. As its name suggests, it's native to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Its history is interesting. First described in 1911, 70 years passed before we learned much about its distribution, abundance or ecology.

One of 5 mammals restricted to Canada, it's the only one listed as endangered. Fewer than 80 individuals remain (wild and captive).
