Marmots eat a wide variety of forbs and grasses. They also require sites with deep soil in which to construct burrows, and specific microclimatic conditions during summer and winter (they hibernate).

An interesting feature of M. vancouverensis ecology is the recent history of colonizing habitats created by clearcut logging of forests above 700 metres.
