Doug Heard and
others plotted records. Locations of recently occupied
(magenta dots) and historically occupied (yellow)
habitats suggested a shrinking range in modern times.
By the 1980s it was
suspected that marmots had already become extinct in some
historically-occupied areas north of Alberni Inlet (e.g.,
Strathcona Provincial Park).
Some people
believed that the apparent absence of marmots reflected
lack of survey effort, and not lack of marmots.
