Doug Heard and others plotted records. Locations of recently occupied (magenta dots) and historically occupied (yellow) habitats suggested a shrinking range in modern times.

By the 1980s it was suspected that marmots had already become extinct in some historically-occupied areas north of Alberni Inlet (e.g., Strathcona Provincial Park).

Some people believed that the apparent absence of marmots reflected lack of survey effort, and not lack of marmots.
