By the mid 1980s it
was believed that while Vancouver Island marmots were
rare, populations were stable or increasing, and there
were few immediate threats.
Some believed that
many marmots remained uncounted, and estimates of 500 can
be found in literature of the period.
Expansion into
man-made habitats such as clearcuts or ski-runs seemed to
imply that marmots were adaptable, and that no new
management activities were required.
