By the mid 1980s it was believed that while Vancouver Island marmots were rare, populations were stable or increasing, and there were few immediate threats.

Some believed that many marmots remained uncounted, and estimates of 500 can be found in literature of the period.

Expansion into man-made habitats such as clearcuts or ski-runs seemed to imply that marmots were adaptable, and that no new management activities were required.
