VANCOUVER ISLAND MARMOT PROGRAM WINS GOLD
|
VICTORIA – Selected from 67 nominations in the Vancouver Island region, the Van-couver Island marmot Recovery Program was awarded top honours in the Partnership category at the Premier’s Awards for Excellence and Innovation at a ceremony held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Fairmont Empress hotel on February 25, 2008.
Faced with the daunting challenge of recovering the Vancouver Island marmot from catastrophically low population numbers in the wild a new partnership model for species recovery was formed with government, industry and the public sharing the costs and responsibilities of recovering this endemic species.
By building a unique partnership between the Provincial and Federal governments, the forest industry, public zoos, private recovery facilities, universities and the public, the Marmot Recovery Program found a clear way forward that serves as a potential model for other endangered species programs.
The new model embodies the best of partnership qualities, including shared cost and responsibilities, widespread community stakeholder support and an innovative, inclusive approach that secures long-term success by deeply involving the stakeholders in the outcomes.
“We’re thrilled to have the partnership recognized as the innovative model it is”, said Viki Jackson, executive director of the Marmot Recovery Foundation, “we couldn’t have made the gains we have for the marmots without the support of our partners”. |
